Lessons from David

Dr. Daniel James Grace Sermon
Lessons from David

1 Sam 16:6-12 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”

1 There are people here today that are chosen to be anointed – chosen – elect
a. God knows it – others may not see it
b. No one imagined who God would choose
c. Samuel sought someone humanly better
d. Jesse sought to favor the oldest sons
e. God looked for a heart that sought to please HIM!
f. Are YOU seeking to please God? Then nothing else matters! God will use your life in some way! God has chosen you if Jesus is FIRST in your life!
g. Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

2 “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature … for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
a. Man judges and is deceived by smiles, clothing & looks
b. God looks at hearts and intentions and is always right
c. Learn to look past appearances and see what God see’s

3 David would kill Goliath
Gideon would destroy large armies with his 300 brave men
Little Israel would take mighty Jericho
Jesus with a few loaves and fishes would feed over 5000 men
12 apostles would revolutionize the world (exchange Paul for Judas)
God uses the Little & overlooked to do the great and impossible
WHAT will God do with YOUR LIFE surrendered to HIM??!!
And if you are capable – wealthy – smart!!! IMAGINE what God will do

4 The prophet had to go through many that were suggested
Something was wrong as God looked at their heart – How is yours today?
Do you remember the older sons at war when Goliath threatened – they were common and not brave at all – just another coward in the crowd!
God saw their hearts

5 “Is this everyone? Are all here?” “There remains yet the youngest”
The pain of being overlooked, set on the margins, judged too young or uncapable
David did not have his fathers approval
His soul must have ached with rejection and a need to affirmed
So many abandoned children, forgotten and ignored by disinterested
Your heavenly father is not like that! God affirms the most weak and hurting to the powerful and capable – God loves us all!
Today let your heavenly father affirm you and wrap you up in arms of love!
God chooses and anoints you in LOVE

6 From that day forward the Spirit of God came over David – or John or Amy or YOU!!!

7 Just one last “secret” from God – What did David have to do for God’s plan to come to pass? Just worship God with his harp and keep the sheep!
Just be obedient and do the little things that God would have you do!

God has you where you are for a reason – do your work – serve your God and BELIEVE that God will pour out His spirit on every willing and obedient heart!

Today if you want to be anointed and selected by God, have your heart ready!

Prayer options:

Anointed – Chosen in God for greatness – prepare to have a heart that seeks God!

Heavenly approval & love – when we feel overlooked, passed over and ignored
