Sweden ends military deal with Saudi Arabia

Sweden will not extend an arms and military training deal with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador to Sweden after a diplomatic row between the two countries, the Swedish government reported on Wednesday

The Saudis had earlier blocked the Swedish foreign minister, Margot Wallström, from speaking about human rights at an Arab leaders’ summit.

But on Tuesday, Arab foreign ministers expressed “condemnation and astonishment” at Wallström’s remarks, which were “incompatible with the fact that the constitution of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is based on sharia [law]”, according to a statement issued at the end of the Arab League meeting and published by Gulf News.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lofven refuted speculations that the move to cancel the deal was in response to the diplomatic standoff. “This has been agreed for some time now. It has nothing to do with what has happened in recent days,” he said, according to Swedish Radio.
